Percussionisms is a modular percussion ensemble based in Boston, MA dedicated to the study of percussion music through performance, collaboration, and commissioning new music from diverse composers.

Our History

Percussionisms formed as a percussion quartet in 2013 in Rock Hill, SC with the mission of performing interesting music in interesting places. Bars, House parties, Basement shows, Art Galleries.

After a two year hiatus, the group reformed in Boston, MA in the fall of 2017 as a modular percussion ensemble comprised of 8 post-graduate professionals rehearsing and performing in various configurations. The first performance of this new iteration was in Brooklyn, NY with a program featuring contemporary percussion music, percussion with electronics, mbira music from Zimbabwe, rudimental snare drumming on a traditional rope drum, and the premier of a new percussion composition.

Most recently the group collaborated with members of the Semiosis String Quartet to put on a unique performance of Rzewski’s Attica, involving a ten-person ensemble, projection, live writing, and a recording of the audience on a loop.

Man, that was weird . . . but I loved it.
